Whilst the public sector has historically been reliant upon manual and paper-based processes, government intiatives are increasing demands to provide better services and greater information. e-Government in particular, is part of a bigger picture aimed at improving public services. The SR2004 Public Service Agreement requires communities and local government to "improve the effectiveness and efficiency of local government in leading and delivering services to all communities" by 2008.
More strategically and under various PFI's, central government is upgrading much of the public sector infrastructure which in turn is consolidating many of the IT systems and working practices. An example of this was the the Lord Chancellor's Department's (known now as the Department for Constitutional Affairs) Libra Project with the objective of delievering a standard IT system for Magistrate's Courts throughout England and Wales. IDT were key to developing the proof-of-concept, selecting and delivering the centralised output management solution for the production of all Court-related documents.
Further examples of how IDT's skills and tools have successfully delivered value across the public sector include solutions for enabling:
- local authorities to automatically generate and deliver critical revenue and benefit documents
- the public to initiate and interact with local authority processes
- hospital NHS trusts and constabulary forces to manage the storage and retrieval of patient records
Recently, IDT's wristband solution (WristStm) has helped a number of large Hospital NHS Trusts to comply with the National Patient Safety Agency's (NPSA) Safer Practice Notice No. 24. The NPSA's notice states that by July 2009 all NHS organisations should be able to produce patient wristbands from the hospital demographic system, and where possible, at bedside. Whilst the solution was developed in line with the NPSA specification, it was recognised that the value went far beyond simple compliance. As additional value-add, the solution includes enhancements to assist with the drug and blood feiting processes.
IDT has partnered with LaserBand to provide a solution that is both swift to implement and significantly cheaper than alternative solutions, as it does not rely upon expensive, specialised printers. Instead, the bands and associated labels are produced from standard laser printers on easy to use single sheets (click for an example).
